A workshop for a furniture maker who wanted an office but did not want a second room. The office was hung in the air of the first one.
One copper stroke, as on every drawing in the register. Here it is the mezzanine - hung, not carried, clear of every wall.
The brief asked for a workshop of about 240 m² and an office of about 40 m². The obvious plan puts the office in a corner and takes that corner away from the workshop, which on a plot this size is a real loss: the maker assembles pieces up to 4.2 m long and needs to walk round them.
Instead the shed is a single volume, 5.6 m from slab to the underside of the truss, and the office is a platform hung from the truss on eight rods. It stops 600 mm short of every wall. Nothing supports it from below and nothing about it interrupts the floor, so a 4.2 m table can pass underneath and the workshop keeps its full width.
The gap round the platform is not a detail we tolerated, it is the reason it works: light from the clerestories falls past it to the floor on all four sides, and the timber dust that any workshop makes has nowhere to shelf.
